Ι. Βιογραφικά


Ο Ιωάννης Π. Αντωνόπουλος  γεννήθηκε τον Νοέμβριο του 1920 στο Canton του Ohio (U.S.A.) από γονείς που κατάγονταν από το Ζυγοβίστι της Αρκαδίας. Έζησε από μικρός και κατά διαστήματα στην πατρίδα των γονιών του. Φοίτησε στο Γυμνάσιο της Δημητσάνας και στην Παιδαγωγική Ακαδημία Τριπόλεως, όπου διδάχτηκε από τον Ευάγγελο Π. Παπανούτσο. Μετά τον πόλεμο επέστρεψε στην Αμερική, υπηρέτησε στον αμερικανικό στρατό (1946-47) και στη συνέχεια σπούδασε στο Columbia University φιλολογικές, φιλοσοφικές και κοινωνικές επιστήμες (Bachelor 1949, Masters 1950, Ph.D. 1954).
Δίδαξε φιλοσοφία σε πολλά αμερικανικά Πανεπιστήμια: Αρχικά στο Πανεπιστήμιο του New Mexico ως επισκέπτης Λέκτορας (1954-55), στη συνέχεια στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Νεμπράσκα ως Αναπληρωτής Καθηγητής (1955-58), στα Πανεπιστήμια SUNY at Buffalo (1962-69), Columbia University (1966), Emory University (1969-82), University Calif. Berkeley (1971-72), Humboldt State (1979), Mills College (1981), U.S.F. New College (1982-83) και από το 1983 στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Νότιας Φλώριδας (University of South Florida), όπου διηύθυνε το Κέντρο Ελληνικών Σπουδών και το Κέντρο Νεοπλατωνικής Έρευνας. Οι περιοχές των ερευνητικών του ενδιαφερόντων ήταν: Κλασική Ελληνική Φιλοσοφία, Ιστορία Φιλοσοφίας, Αμερικανική Φιλοσοφία, Φιλοσοφία της τέχνης, Αισθητική και Μεταφυσική.
Ανακηρύχθηκε Αντεπιστέλλον Μέλος της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών και Επίτιμος Διδάκτορας τεσσάρων ελληνικών Πανεπιστημίων (Αθηνών 1992, Πατρών 2004, Ιωαννίνων 2005 και Θεσσαλονίκης 2008).
Επέστρεψε επανειλημμένα στην Ελλάδα και έλαβε μέρος σε μια μεγάλη σειρά συνεδρίων, επιστημονικών εκδηλώσεων και διαλέξεων. Έχουν διασωθεί σελίδες από το ημερολόγιό του κατά την διάρκεια του Δευτέρου Παγκόσμιου Πολέμου, όπως τον βίωσε στην Ελλάδα.
